Acne affects so many individuals globally, however, individuals with melanin-rich skin can be more susceptible to acne. Specifically, darker complexions are prone to dark marks, scars, or even keloids from breakouts. But why? In darker complexions, melanin (what colours our skin & hair) also protects us from harsh UV rays & inflammation. If you’ve ever had one of those large & in-charge breakouts, you know inflammation from acne is no joke. When our skin gets inflamed, it produces melanin to protect us - and this is how we get those pesky dark spots. But how do I treat it? Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, a.k.a. PIH or dark spots, will fade naturally after the underlying inflammation is controlled. However, there are some products we can use to speed up this process! My favourites are Retinol Clearing Oil & Daily Microfoliant from Dermalogica! Retinol Clearing Oil contains both retinol and salicylic acid to optimize skin recovery, reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, & target active breakouts. Daily Microfoliant is a rice-based powder exfoliant. It contains an ingredient called Phytic Acid which helps immensely with the appearance of hyperpigmentation. If you’re a skincare junkie like me, I also use the whole Powerbright line from Dermalogica as well. Remember with PIH, dark spots often start to look worse before better - so keep up with that routine!
