HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF A BLOWOUT

Shanna Watts
Hey there! We have opened our salon (yay) and you have booked your appointment to get your roots done, but until then... here’s a blog post all about BLOWOUTS. How to maintain your locks, and attempt your blowout at home while waiting for your appointment.
1st step: As soon as I get out of the shower I ring out my hair and brush through a few of my favourite products. Right now I use Olaplex #6 (works great to detangle) and a dime size of Kevin Murphy Young Again Oil on my ends.

2nd step: I always let my hair dry to about 70-80% with the product already combed through to maintain frizz. I put on my makeup, get dressed, eat breakfast, and by then it is dry enough to start!

3rd step: Before blow drying, I spray my hair with a heat protectant! I use Kevin Murphy Heated Defense. I section out my hair and clip the rest on top. Don’t hold the blow dryer so that it’s touching the brush, hold it just an inch or two away from your hair.
HOT TIP: I always try to hold my brush so that the handle is pointing forward. For me, it makes things feel less awkward!
4th step: I take the next section of hair and do the same thing. If you can’t do the back, it’s easier to pull your hair all to the front! For the top back section I will pull my section of hair straight up with my brush and blow dry to increase the volume.
5th step: For my bang area I like to blow dry my hair away from my face. Just so that it doesn’t curl completely under and I get a little volume at the root. Finish it off with a light hairspray, my favourite is Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair.
Practice makes perfect, I promise! It’s a little tricky to figure out how to hold a brush and the blow dryer and make sure your hair isn’t flying everywhere... but find what is comfortable for you and go with that! And if not, we’ll be here to save you. ️

See you very soon, Shanna <3

HOT TIPS FOR HEAT STYLING

Heat is easily the most common method of styling hair; from blow drying to flat ironing, curling to crimping- our hair sees it all. If you’ve ever wondered the best ways to protect your hair from the damage that these beautiful styles cause, this blog is for you!
  • Invest in quality hot tools! They are worth the money every time, and last much longer than the competitors. Having professional hot tools will help prevent your iron from overheating and causing unnecessary damage.
  • Heat protection is everything! Use this in your hair consistently before styling and you will notice a huge difference- salon grade heat protection will cover up to 450° and come in a wide variety of lotions or wet and dry sprays. They are an absolute lifesaver for your hair!
  • Avoid the 450° setting! Even with a great heat protectant, don't cook your hair at the same temperature you cook a pizza! For curls trying keeping your iron at 390° and for straightening try 365°.
  • Let your style set! When you finish heat styling your hair, leave it be for 10 minutes before brushing and adding your final products. Allowing your hair to cool down in place will make your style hold for days to come.
  • Try to avoid using heat daily! Set a hair wash schedule that works for you and try different heatless options of styling on days that you can; for example if you curled your hair on day 1, rock a half pony on day 2, and messy bun or braid on day 3. We tend to over iron the pieces of hair around our face which causes breakage. Making an effort to get more days out of your style will result in much happier hair!

Consistency is key when seeing results in heat styling, but I promise, the little extra steps make a world of difference. Put that heat protectant on, style those beautiful locks, and go through the weak hair whipping like the goddess you are (or you know, put your hair in a messy bun because quarantine, totally your call!).

NAIL INSPIRATION
Hey there! Ailesh from Salon Society in Regina, SK here. Do you ever sit down to do your nails but cannot for the life of you decide what designs to put on your nails? Finding inspiration for new designs and new creative nail sets can be frustrating sometimes so I've put together a three of my favourite places to look for nail inspiration!
Picture
1. Pinterest

Pinterest is probably the most common place nail artists turn to for inspiration. However I like to use Pinterest a bit differently when I'm looking to be creative; instead of just looking for nail art that's been done before, I love using Pinterest to find artistic concepts. Try using Pinterest as a research tool: search for drawings, paintings, tattoos, and photography to adapt into nail designs!
2. Nail Artists

Social media is a great place to get inspired by other incredible nail artists. There are so many crazy talented and artistic people out there making art - so give them a follow and get inspired!

Some of my favourite Instagram accounts are :
@ninanailedit
@sierrasnails_
@corasunsetarts

3. Nature

Try finding inspiration from the natural world. Nature is full of colour, pattern, and texture! Flowers, leaves, animal prints, marble, crystals, geodes - the options are endless!!

Hey everyone! Ailesh from Salon Society in Regina, SK here and today we're talking nail art.

I adore nail art - no secret there - and I really feel that sometimes the most beautiful designs are simple elements layered together. So today I've put together an easy tutorial you can follow without needing any sort of advanced techniques.
step 1 nail art
Step 1 - Base Colour

To start prep your cuticles & nails, apply your primer & base coat, and apply the chosen base design colour on the whole nail of every nail.
nail art step 2
Step 2 - Colour Blocks

Next you want to apply your colour blocks. I think that abstract designs look best when each nail has a different shape or amount of colouring blocking done. This imprecise blocking also allows for some imperfection in your designs which is great for nail art newbies!
nail art step 3
Step 3 - Add Your Stripes

Now add a thin stripe of colour next to the colour blocks. Don't be too worried about making a super straight clean line - imperfection really adds to the look.
nail art 4
Step 4 - Start Speckling

Using a thin brush or dotting tool, add tiny speckles to the colour blocked area. Once again, don't worry about perfection - we are wanting speckles not perfect polka dots so don't stress! Apply your top coat and voilà you've made art!

I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE THINKING..... BUT NADINE- YOU ONLY DO NATURAL, LIVED-IN COLOURS!?

I know, I know. But there's just something about this trend that has me feeling hella creative lately! I mean, obviously I've been spending some time on TikTok during lockdown, you know.... like every other human on the planet right now. Quarantine's got us doing crazy things. Something about this trend has caught my eye, it's so fun!

Why I love this trend so much:
- not a huge commitment, you are only lighting a small section of your hair
- when the colour fades you can try multiple different ones
- makes a statement!
I pre-ordered everything I need to make these colour dreams a reality, so if this trend is on your radar- get at me! Let's make some magic.

4 TOP TIPS FOR BANGS

5/5/2020

OPINION:
AILESH ABRAMS, NAIL TECHNICIAN

SALON SOCIETY

Best Nail Tech Regina
Hey everyone! Ailesh from Salon Society here in Regina, SK. Bangs are not always easy but they are super cute and trendy. While I am not a stylist, I have been rocking full straight bangs for years now and I wanted to share what I've learned about living with bangs with you all!

Read on for my 4 Top Tips for Bangs:

1. Dry Shampoo is Life

Dry shampoo is an ultimate beauty product for everyone, however it is truly a necessity for those with bangs. Bangs are super cute but unfortunately they can get greasy fast! When you get bangs you'll notice quickly that the way they sit against your forehead all day results in more oil absorbed in them than the rest of your hair. Dry shampoo in your bangs is the key to this problem!

TOP TIP: Apply your dry shampoo at night and sleep with it in to wake up ready to rock. My favourite dry shampoo is Kevin Murphy's Fresh Hair - it smells AMAZING and it works!

2. The Bang Wash

Sometime I find that dry shampoo isn't going to cut it with my oily bangs but that the rest of my hair really doesn't need a hair wash yet and looks super cute. If your bangs are significantly more oily than the rest of your hair, try washing just the bangs. To do this, pull the rest of your hair back into a pony or braids. Next wet just the bangs and use a small amount of shampoo to wash them. Follow-up with blowdrying and you are ready to go!

My favourite shampoo for a quick bang wash is Kevin Murphy's Angel Wash - it smells great and provides a great gentle clean, removing all grease but leaving the hair hydrated!

3. Hair Training

When you first start out your bangs may not do exactly what you want them to. I have straight bangs and they needed to be blowdried and trained to stop them from splitting down my part line. A bit of work and dedication is all it takes to train them into the shape you desire!

4. Blowdryer > Straightener

When it comes to styling bangs I've learned that to its best to use a blowdryer. I've found trying to use a flat iron or curling iron to do major changes/damage control on out of control bangs usually results in flat, weird bangs. Instead, it is better to wet the bangs and blow dry to style, following with an iron to perfect if need be.

LET'S TALK
ALL THINGS CURLS,
WITH OUR
CURLY HAIR SPECIALISTS

SALON SOCIETY

1368 ROSE STREET, REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN

Curly Haircut by Aaron Brousseau
Let’s talk about naturally curly hair!! At Salon Society, we have several Curly Hair Specialists. These stylists have experience and training in how to make curly hair look its absolute best!

We know that curls can be temperamental, but we also know that the key to rocking curls and making them look their best is education - we’ll let you in on our curly hair secrets!

Picture
  1. Curl Pattern and Density - As we know, curls are not all the same. When looking at curly hair types there are two factors to consider: pattern and density. For pattern, we are looking at wavy vs. curly vs. kinky vs. coily. For density, we are looking to see if we are dealing with finer hair or thicker hair. There are all types of pattern and density combinations - and all different types of curly hair!

  2. Structure - The key to great curls is a great haircut - and the key to a great haircut is structure. Curly haircuts need to be shaped (or structured) to suit the curls; we don’t want any strange poofing or weird angles!

  3. Washing + Conditioning - As with all hair care, picking the right products is key. Unlike most hair types, curls can be temperamental. Finding the right shampoo and conditioner duo can be tricky, however, a safe starting point is the Kerastase Curl Manifesto line, seriously life-changing for curls!!

  4. Styling - Getting all the right products for your curls will change your life! Kevin Murphy has some great curl products and the whole Kerastase Curl Manifesto line is INCREDIBLE! Book in for a product consultation with one of our curly hair specialists for a routine customized to your curls.

  5. The Right Tools for the Job - Curly hair must-haves are: a wide tooth comb for detangling, a wet brush, the Unraveler brush (a brush so great getting its own blog post - coming soon), and a diffuser for your blow dryer!

Pro-Tips for getting the most out of your curls:
  • Swap that regular towel out for a microfibre towel or a cotton t-shirt. Using a microfibre towel or cotton t-shirt will prevent your hair snagging and reduce breakage.

  • Take a break from your blow dryer for a hot girl summer and go steady with it (and a diffuser) in the winter.

  • Detangle before and during showering with a wide tooth comb. Using your comb this way will reduce knotting and help eliminate all of those shedding hairs.

  • Use your wet brush to avoid breakage and Kelly Knowles Unraveler to boost curl definition.

  • Wearing a silk cap/bonnet to bed is truly life-changing and protects your curls from frizz & flattening overnight.

  • Keep your paws off your hair! The less you touch your curls the happier they will be!!

Those are all our hidden secrets about curly hair and how to treat those locks with the care they deserve. If you have any questions about your curls, comment, come in to see any of our curl specialists!
