Let's Talk About Texture Sprays

7/27/2023

Texture spray is a super versatile product, and one that everyone should have in their home hair product collections! Texture spray can be used to achieve more volume, to separate curls or waves, and some can even be used to absorb oil to help extend your style!

There are two main types of texture sprays: dry texture sprays and sea salt sprays. Dry texture spray is applied to dry hair to add texture and separation, while sea salt spray is applied to wet hair to create a beachy texture working with natural wave patterns.

As a stylist, I have to say I am obsessed with the dry texture sprays and I use them on all my clients! The best part? They are honestly such an easy product to use: after styling just spray the texture product in before hairspray (if using hairspray), brush it through, and then apply again!

My favourite dry texture sprays are:

Kevin Murphy BEDROOM.HAIR

Picture
Basically this is the epitome of bedroom hair that is sexy and edgy. In addition to adding texture and separation, it also acts as a light hair spray. Your hair feels touchable thanks to just the right balance of texture, separation, and movement.

Kevin Murphy DOO.OVER

Picture
One of the absolute faves around the salon is Doo.Over. It's a dry powder finishing spray that allows for natural movement while holding everything in place, with the right amount of hold.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

Picture
This one is seriously amazing. It's an invisible dry hair spray that builds incredible volume, gives good curl separation, and creates sexy texture. As a bonus, it absorb oil at the roots without leaving any powdery residue, for a great alternative to dry shampoo that keeps styles lasting for days. And of course, it smells sooo good.
For those beach wave days, my go to salt sprays are Hair Resort Spray from Kevin Murphy, and Oribe’s Après Beach or Matte Waves. They help build that wave and texture and they smell aaaamazing!!!
Now that I have shared all my texture faves with you, I want to know… Do you use texture spray? Tell me in the comments or send me a DM to chat about styling and product recommendations!!

Curl friends, it’s your time!

Wondering what the CADŌ is all about?

"The cado signature curly cut is designed to create beautiful cascading layers, ‘the cado layers’, volume, and a balanced shape on short or long hair!”
After experimenting and perfecting my cado skills, I have found that Oribe has some amazing products; the Curl Gelée, Moisture Mask, Curl Gloss, and Shaping Mousse are my top products when doing both CADŌ cuts and styles!

Here are the deets on managing and achieving healthy, defined, bouncy curls at home:

The Oribe Curl Gelée is a leave-in treatment applied to damp hair and scrunched in, that helps to define curls, reduce frizz, and add shine. Infused with a blend of shea butter, avocado and jojoba oils, this product nourishes and hydrates your curls, leaving them soft, bouncy, and full of life.
Picture

The Oribe Moisture Mask is a deep conditioning treatment that provides major hydration to curly hair. Infused with a blend of avocado oil, murumuru butter, and shea butter, it repairs and strengthens damaged hair while restoring moisture and shine.
  • Apply wet hair, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly.
Picture

The Oribe Curl Gloss is a lightweight serum that adds shine and definition to curly hair. Made with a blend of coconut oil, macadamia oil, and mango seed butter, this product helps to tame frizz, enhance curls, and protect your hair from heat damage.
  • Apply a small amount to damp hair and scrunch your curls for a glossy look.
Picture

Finally, the Oribe Curl Shaping Mousse is a lightweight mousse that helps to add volume, shape, and definition to curly hair. Infused with a blend of sweet almond oil, sunflower seed extract, and hydrolyzed wheat protein, this mousse helps to strengthen and protect your hair while enhancing your natural curl pattern.
  • Apply the mousse to damp hair and scrunch to create that bouncy Beyoncé booty finish!

Don't Make These 6 Hair-Damaging Mistakes

7/17/2023

Hair is composed mainly of keratin, a protein formed by amino acid molecules sourced from our food. Exposure to the sun, pollution, and changes in our lifestyle can be factors in dry, brittle, and lifeless hair.

Here are some mistakes we make that can cause damage to our hair:

  1. Washing our hair too often can strip away the natural oils that protect our hair and scalp.

  2. Rinsing with steaming hot water can hinder the way our hair and scalp absorb nutrients and oxygen which can lead to hair fall.

  3. Detangling from the roots causes tension and potential breakage - try ends to roots!

  4. Sleeping with wet hair risks a fungal or bacterial infection on the scalp.

  5. Sleeping on a cotton pillowcase absorbs the oils from our hair and skin, which can leave them dry, brittle, and prone to breakage.

TIP: Satin pillowcases allow the hair to slide effortlessly, meaning waking up with smoother and shinier hair!

  6. Wearing your hair in a high, tight ponytail can result in hair damage, and in some extreme cases, a receding hairline.

Healthy and strong hair is critical and can be achieved with the proper maintenance, care, and a little love! If you want to learn more about how to create the best hair routine for you, you can always schedule a free consultation or a haircut with us and we will be more than happy to help.

7 Reasons Why Your Hair Isn't Growing

7/15/2023

Hey everyone, Miranda from Salon Society here to talk about growing long and healthy hair! I know that those long-hair goals can be tough to achieve - and you are definitely not alone if you are feeling confused or frustrated by a lack of progress.

Does it feel like your hair grows the slowest in the whole world? Or maybe know it’s growing because those roots are getting noticeably longer… but your length is not changing??

There are some huge factors that tie into these issues and I am here to help with some top reasons why your hair might not be growing:

1. Not Enough Moisture

Moisture is KEY, especially for my curly peeps. Without moisture our hair will not survive the long, dry prairie winters or the hot hot, dusty summers. Did you know dry hair is the number one cause of split ends, breakage, tangles, and dullness?

A good way to avoid dryness and breakage is to use hydrating products that match your hair needs - to find these shoot me a DM or book a free consultation! Frequent treatments, hair masks, applying oils, and avoiding drying products (such as dry texture sprays and dry shampoos) are also good ways to up your hydration levels.

2. Lacking Vitamins

Just like our skin needs vitamins to be glowy and healthy, so does our hair. When we lack these things our hair can seem brittle and not hold onto the moisture it needs. I always recommend Collagen, Biotin and Vitamin E to all my clients when they feel like their hair is not growing. Research shows that deficiencies in vitamins and minerals can lead to early hair loss and thinning. Try adding a multivitamin and a hair serum containing vitamins to your morning and/or night routine!

3. Water Intake

Remember Reason #1? Water makes up almost 25% of the total weight of a single strand of hair. It is also the key ingredient in supporting vitamins, which contribute to hair growth. By drinking at least two litres of water a day, your hair will strengthen and grow (and it is super beneficial for your skin and overall health too!!).

4. Everyday Washing

When we wash our hair every day we strip away all those beneficial healthy oils - and when we lack oil our scalp panics and starts overproducing sebum to make up for the loss. This is what makes your hair seem “greasy”.

Washing your hair every day can cause your hair to dry out very fast and lead to breakage. Many people think by wetting your hair, you are giving it hydration, but that isn't the case. The Ph of our water tends to sit around a 7, our hair needs to be between 4.5-5.5 to stay healthy. Try leaving a few days in between your washes, I know it's hard but it will be worth it.

HOT TIP: Check out Nadine’s blog on Co-Washing here to learn how to go more days between washes!

5. Using the Wrong Products

Using quality salon products is super important. When you buy drugstore products unfortunately you are not getting a bottle of that luscious hair advertised on TV - you’re often harming your hair with harsh chemicals, alcohols, and sulphates that cause hair thinning, breakage, and discoloration.

By using the lines we sell in-salon like Kevin Murphy, Kérastase, and Oribe, you are getting products that have been developed for professionals that are clinically and SASO-tested. These salon products give your hair a better chance of healing, becoming healthy, and maintaining its health.  If you are having trouble finding the right products leave a comment, send me a DM, book a free consultation, or just swing by Salon Society and have a chat with one of us - we love sharing product knowledge!

6. Not Protecting Your Hair While You Sleep

It is very important to protect our hair while we sleep, especially if you have curly hair or extensions. When we sleep we tend to create friction against our cotton pillows. This friction causes hair to matt, split, and break. A few ways to protect your hair while sleeping are to use silk or satin pillowcases, wear a silk bonnet, braid your hair, sleep with a night serum in - or even better all of the ABOVE! Trust me guys, I do ALL of these things and it has been a game changer!!

7. Heat Damage

Hot tools such as blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners can seriously damage your hair. Using high heat on a day-to-day basis, especially without heat protection, can be a huge cause of dry broken hair. You can try cutting down the frequency with which you apply heat to your hair, and add in a really good heat protectant. Instead of heat styles, try heatless styling with braids, heatless curling techniques, claw clips, scarfs and hats to spice up your style routine!
You're probably thinking, “Jeez, you sound like a broken record”. I'm here to tell you you're not wrong.! All of these things legitimately tie into one another. Think of it like the domino effect; when one thing is off, the rest can slowly spiral out of control as well. 2023 is the year we say goodbye to dry, broken hair. Let's put ourselves first, start a good routine and make healthy habits!

3 Reasons to Use Heat Protectant for Healthier, Happier Hair

7/11/2023

Using Heat Protectant is essential when using hot tools on your hair - but why?

Heat protectant products help to reduce the amount of damage that your hair sustains when exposed to high temperatures. They work by forming a protective barrier around the hair shaft, which helps to prevent moisture loss and breakage. Still not convinced? Here are some of the main benefits of heat protectant:

1) Avoid Split Ends & Breakage

One of the main benefits of using heat protectant is that it can help prevent split ends and breakage. When using hot styling tools on your hair, the high temperatures can cause the hair shaft to become dry and brittle. By using a heat protectant product, you are actively promoting healthy and strong hair!

2) Reduce Frizz & Flyaways

When you use hot tools on your hair, the high temperatures can cause the hair cuticle to become rough and uneven leading to frizz and flyaways. Using a heat protectant can help to smooth the hair cuticle and reduce frizz, leaving your hair smooth and shiny!

3) Extend the Life of Your Hairstyle

The use of hot tools without heat protectant can cause your hairstyle to fall flat more quickly. Using a heat protectant will help to keep your hairstyle looking fresh and bouncy for longer!
Heat protectant products are an important step in protecting your hair from damage caused by hot tools. Say goodbye to split ends, breakage, frizz, flyaways, and flat hairstyles with some of our favourite heat protectants:

Bri's Top Products That Everyone Needs

7/3/2023

Hello everyone, Bri from Salon Society here! As a stylist, I get to see and sample all the different products and brands both on my hair and my clients' hair. My hair is fine with a natural wavy texture and these products are my top favourites that I cannot live without - and ones that I bet you'll fall in love with too!

Kevin Murphy Session Spray Flex

  • Holds fine hair that doesn’t normally hold curl
  • Not sticky or crunchy
  • Not drying
I like to use this hairspray when I’m curling my fine hair. I section my hair in three sections and spray each section before I curl it. Once all my hair is curled I give it an extra spray, let it cool, then brush them out - and BOOM gorgeous curls that last!
Picture

Kevin Murphy Body Mass

  • For the thin hair friends
  • Created using eyelash thickening technology
  • Helps strengthen hair
  • Creates fullness & thickness
Picture
I like to use this thickening volumizer after I wash my hair! First, I apply my leave-in conditioner and then spray Body Mass all over, focusing mostly on my roots. Then I am ready to blow dry and get some gorgeous volume!

Hot Tip - Body Mass can also be used as a heat protectant up to 420°F (232°C)!

Kérastase Nutritive 8hr Magic Night Serum

  • Nourishes and repairs overnight
  • Reverses daytime damage
  • Booster for dry hair but beneficial for all hair types

I use this serum every night! I put 2-4 pumps in my hands, rake it through the mids and ends of my hair, I brush it through, go to sleep, and wake up with gorgeous smooth hair!
#magic.

If I am finding my hair to be reeaaaalllllyyy dry, I will add a pump of my favourite hair oil with the night serum and the results are incredible!
Picture

Kérastase Specifique Bain Divalent

& Masque Réhydratant

  • Best for oily prone hair
  • Purifies the scalp
  • Reduces excess oil and odours
  • Nourishes and strengthens hair shaft
  • Lightweight
  • Adds extra moisture and hydration
  • Prevents loss of proteins, collagen diners, and elastin
This shampoo + mask duo has been a game changer for my hair! As mentioned above, I have fine hair but a lot of it has a natural wave. My roots would always get really oily quickly but since starting with this shampoo I can go further between wash days and don’t need to rely on dry shampoo as much to keep my hair looking fresh!!

Since my hair has a natural wave, the ends can get pretty dry (and I also have pretty damaged, over processed hair); this mask has helped give my hair the hydration it needs while strengthening it. My hair no longer feels dry and the frizz is under control!
Picture

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray

  • Adds volume and texture
  • Absorbs oil at the roots, brilliant dry shampoo alternative
  • Provides UV protection

I love using this dry texture spray when I’m going out! It gives that extra hold my curls are looking for, plus amazing volume at my roots!
Picture

Aaaand those are my faves! I hope that you get a chance to try some of them out!!

8 Steps to Better Curls

3/20/2023

Hello curly people! It's me, Advanced Master Stylist & Curl Specialist, Aaron Brousseau writing today to chat about natural curls. As a person with curly hair, I completely understand how frustrating it can be trying to make those damn curls do what you want them to! But never fear - today I am going to share my 8 Steps to Better Curls: Curly Hair Routine.

This curly routine is only 8 steps and it really makes a world of difference in getting the most bounce and definition out of your natural texture. The key equation to remember is that Hydration + Structure = Flawless Curls.

HYDRATING SHAMPOO + CONDITIONER

Starting with hydrating shampoo and conditioner is super important. My top pick is Kerastase Curl Manifesto shampoo and conditioner, they're lightweight but suuuuper hydrating and smell divine.

SOAKING STYLING

On soaking wet hair, apply Oribe Curl Gloss for ultimate hydration, shine, hold and protection from humidity, then follow with Oribe's Curl Gelée by smoothing it through your curls.

SCRUNCH + TWIST

Scrunch your hair to maximize bounce then twist out a few pieces to add definition and detail.

SQUEEZE

Now squeeze some of the excess moisture out with a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt (regular towels will cause frizz!), then add a few good dollops of your favourite Curl/Volume mousse! I would recommend trying Oribe's Curl Shaping Mousse or Grandiose Plumping Mousse (I actually love layering the two for a stunning curl volume cocktail ?). Flip your head over and give it one last scrunch.

HOVER

Now, with a diffuser on your blow dryer, heat on high and speed medium, I want you to HOVER!! Do NOT touch the curls until they're almost fully dry! I like to do around 5-7 minutes with my head flipped forward then repeat, flipping the hair to each side, then again on the back. The goal here is to focus most of the airflow at the roots.

DIFFUSE TO DRY

When the hair has formed a bit of a "cast" and the curls are feeling stiff and mostly dry, turn the heat down to low and speed to medium/low. Starting at the ends, start pushing the diffuser up to the scalp, kind of like an accordion!

ADD VOLUME

Once the hair is 10000% DRY the structure will be locked in. You can now work on adding volume by spraying a lightweight texture spray like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray and use a pick to add lift at the roots!

FINAL TOUCH

Finish off by scrunching in your favourite oil for shine, moisture, and protection. Some of my faves are Kerastase Curl Manifesto Huile Sublime, Kerastase Elixir Ultime Oil for Colour-Treated Hair, Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil, and Kevin Murphy Young Again Oil!

As a Curl Specialist, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the fresh confidence my clients gain by learning the best tricks and tips for their natural curls. Every person's hair is unique and you may have to experiment to find the routine and product combo that is best for you - but I hope my 8 Steps to Better Curls helps you find the way to yours!

I would super encourage every single person with curls to book a Curly Cut or a Cadō Cut with me or one of my fellow Curl Specialists at Salon Society - we love helping our clients get the most out of their curls with the right cut and routine.

If you have any questions about curly hair or any of the products mentioned, feel free to send me a DM or leave a comment below. We cannot wait to see you (and your curls) at Salon Society!

Ask a Stylist: Hair Masks

8/7/2022

So we all know that hair masks are great and that they are SO beneficial for our hair… but how am I supposed to be using them? Is this like an everyday thing? Is this a one size fits all? Wait, was I supposed to put conditioner in after I rinsed it out? WAS I SUPPOSED TO RINSE IT OUT???

…If you have ever wondered if you were doing things right, you are not alone! A lovely client recently reached out to her Salon Society stylist after receiving a sample Kérastase hair mask in her online order with very similar questions, which started us thinking about all the FAQs regarding hair masks we get at Salon Society on the regular. Then we took this list to our girl (and Master Hair Artist)
Shanna and had her give us the answers!

And now we have created this ultimate hair mask rundown:
Picture
How often should you use a hair mask?
Depends how often you wash your hair! If you wash it about once a week, use a mask every other time you wash. If you wash your hair more often, like every day or every other day, use a mask once per week. Also, don't wash your hair every day!

Does a hair mask replace conditioner?

Swimmer's Hair - How to Treat Dry, Damaged Locks

7/17/2022

Hey friends! It is summer and that means sunshine, great weather, and pools!! Unfortunately, while hanging in the pool all day is great for having a good time, it is not great for our hair. Hair that is exposed to the chemicals in pools or all that salt in the ocean can become dry, damaged, and even discoloured. This is known as Swimmer’s Hair.

How it works…
There are a number of chemicals found in pools that cause damage to hair including bromine, chlorine, salt, and copper. When our hair comes into contact with these chemicals they can break down the keratin protein bonds, resulting in visibly damaged hair. Additionally, swimming in the ocean exposes your hair to all that sea salt; salt strips hair of its oils, causing it to dry out and subsequently become damaged. Copper, surprisingly, is one of the most damaging water additives and it is often used to prevent algae and microorganisms from growing in pools!

Picture
Picture
Picture
What you can do about it…
Prevention is ideal. If you're swimming laps on the regular or are sure to get your locks wet, consider a swimming cap or turban (swimming turbans are the swimming caps' far more fashionable cousin). If you're hot tubbing or chilling in a pool, try a high ponytail or bun!

If you know you are going to be putting your hair in the water, dampening hair with water prior to entering a pool or ocean can help with reducing the absorption of salts and chemicals.

There are also some pretty incredible products designed to protect and repair your locks!

Even better, you may already have the first in your shower: a great clarifying shampoo like Maxi Wash by Kevin Murphy. Maxi Wash removes the build-up of unwanted products and chemicals (including chlorine build-up) from the hair – this makes it an ultimate swimmer must-have.

Next up, is the Argile Équilibrante. This treatment is a detox clay that intensely, yet gently, cleanses and purifies the scalp. Containing Amino Acid and Kaolin Clay that helps to balance sebum on the scalp, remove pollution and impurities like a magnet, whilst making hair look volumized. Enriched with menthol, it leaves the scalp feeling invigorated and refreshed.

Anddd the star of this show: the Kérastase Soleil line. The Soleil collection from Kérastase acts as a shield for hair, protecting against both sun and UV damage. Its range of four ultra-nourishing products help prevent dryness and fading from chlorine and salt water - so basically everything we need to protect from swimmer's hair!
