Dos & Don'ts for Handling Breakouts

7/9/2023

Breakouts. Those stubborn things we want to go as fast as they appear. When dealing with these pesky guys, there are specific dos & don’ts we need to follow to make sure they heal properly!

STEP 1 - DON'T TOUCH IT

Touching your breakouts can aggravate the area, spread oils & bacteria, & worsen breakouts.

Picking, poking, & popping acne can cause the bacteria & pus to go deeper into the skin + increase swelling and redness, and cause scabs, and possible scarring - which ultimately makes them hang out for longer.

So the bottom line is - no touching!

STEP 2 - ICE ICE BABY

Ice is your best friend when it comes to cost-effective ways to tackle pimples. Icing pimples reduce redness & swelling and has a temporary numbing effect for those super-sensitive areas.

STEP 3 - SKIP THE SCRUBS

Scrubbing acne-prone skin can irritate your skin & ultimately make swelling & redness worse. When dealing with breakouts, we want to be gentle!

STEP 4 - USE A TREATMENT

There are multiple topical acne treatments you can try, depending on what will work best for you! The best acne treatments are preventative - this means products like face cleansers & serums that we use regularly.

Cleansers -  containing exfoliating ingredients like glycolic acid, AHAs & salicylic acid

Serums - containing salicylic acid, niacinamide, & retinol

Spot Treatments are treatments developed specifically for a targetted area with breakouts. My favourite spot treatment is the Post Breakout Fix from Dermalogica.

STEP 5 - PATIENCE

Patience is key when it comes to treating breakouts. With time & the proper treatment, they will go away!
I hope these 5 steps can help you manage future breakouts! If acne is something you struggle with, check out my Acne Bootcamp. Plus if you have any other breakout or skin questions please shoot me a DM, leave a comment, or book a free consultation.
