7 Tips To Keep Your Extensions Looking Their Best

1/13/2025

Picture
Hair extensions are a major game-changer for adding length, volume, and thickness to your hair. To keep them looking gorgeous and lasting as long as possible, proper care is essential. While there are differences in care instructions for different types of extensions, some care tips are universal. With the right routine and high-quality products you can extend the life of your extensions and care for your natural hair.

1. Never Sleep on Wet Hair
Wet hair is more prone to tangling and breakage, which can compromise both your natural hair and your extensions. Before bed, gently detangle your hair and secure it in a protective style, such as a loose braid, to prevent tangles. A sleep bonnet or satin pillowcase will also help to reduce friction and keep your extensions smooth.

Pro Tip: Always dry your hair before bed and secure it in a protective style, such as a loose braid or ponytail, to prevent tangles. Sleeping on a satin pillowcase minimizes friction, keeping your extensions smooth and secure.

2. Brush Regularly (and Gently)
Brushing is essential to prevent tangles, especially near the roots. However, extensions require special care to avoid damaging the bonds.
  • Use a detangle brush designed for extensions.
  • Start at the ends and gently work your way up. Hold your hair near the root to reduce tension on the bonds or wefts.
Brushing twice daily—morning and night—is recommended to keep your extensions looking polished.

3. Wash with Care
Over-washing you extensions can lead to dryness and breakage, so aim for every 2–3 days. When you do wash, follow these steps:
  • Use lukewarm water to avoid weakening adhesives or expanding nano rings.
  • Gently massage shampoo into scalp and let it flow through your extensions. Avoid scrubbing or harsh movements.
  • Focus conditioner, like Kerastase Fondant Extensioniste, on the mid-lengths and ends to hydrate without causing slipping or adhesive breakdown.
Rinse thoroughly to remove all product and avoid buildup.

4. Hydrate Weekly
Hair extensions don’t receive natural oils from your scalp, so keeping them hydrated is crucial.
  • Use a nourishing mask like Kerastase Masque Extensioniste once a week to replenish moisture.
  • Apply sparingly to avoid product buildup, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.

5. Protect from Heat
Stylists are always preaching the importance of heat protection and for good reason! Hot tools like flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers can damage both your extensions and natural hair.
  • Always apply a heat protectant, such as Kerastase Discipline Thermique, before using heat tools.
  • Use a low to medium heat setting, and avoid direct heat on the bonds or attachment points.

6. Protect During Swimming
Chlorine and saltwater can dry out extensions and weaken bonds. Before swimming:
  • Wet your hair with fresh water.
  • Apply a leave-in conditioner to create a barrier.
  • Style in a braid or other protective style.
  • Wear a swim cap for maximum protection.
After swimming, rinse thoroughly and apply a hydrating treatment.

7. Schedule Regular Salon Visits
Professional maintenance is essential for keeping your extensions secure and looking fresh. During these appointments, your stylist can check the bonds and make necessary adjustments. Maintenance schedules vary depending on extension type, make sure to ask your stylist when you should be coming back and prebook!

Hair extensions are an investment in your beauty, and proper care will keep them looking flawless for weeks or even months. With daily maintenance, the right products, and professional upkeep, you can enjoy long-lasting, gorgeous extensions while protecting your natural hair.
If you’re unsure about specific care techniques, don’t hesitate to consult your stylist for personalized advice. A little extra effort goes a long way in keeping your extensions as beautiful as the day they were installed!

How to Layer Products

1/7/2025

Picture
Layering hair products can transform your hair care routine, delivering optimal results for healthier, shinier, and more manageable locks. However, knowing the right order and combinations is key to avoiding product buildup or counterproductive effects. Here are some expert tips and tricks from Salon Society to help you master the art of product layering for your best hair yet.

why layering matters.

Each hair product serves a specific purpose, whether it’s cleansing, hydrating, protecting, or styling. By layering them correctly, you ensure that each product performs as intended, enhancing the overall health and appearance of your hair. Proper layering also prevents weighing your hair down or causing residue buildup.

The Golden Rule of Layering: Always layer products from the lightest to the heaviest consistency. Lightweight products, such as sprays and serums, should go first to penetrate the hair shaft, followed by creams and oils that seal and protect.

step-by-step guide to layering hair products.

1. Precleanse and Double Shampoo
For the best cleanse, start with a precleanse or double shampoo routine to remove buildup and prepare your hair for treatments. This is especially important if you use styling products frequently or have an oily scalp.
  • Precleanse: Use Kérastase Chronologiste Pré-Cleanse Régénérant to deeply cleanse the scalp and remove impurities, ensuring a fresh foundation for your hair care routine.
  • Double Shampoo: Begin with a gentle shampoo for cleansing, followed by a targeted shampoo tailored to your hair’s needs. For instance, follow Kérastase Bain Vital Dermo-Calm with Kérastase Nutritive Bain Satin Shampoo for hydration.

2. Condition
Follow up with a conditioner or a deeply nourishing masque that addresses your hair’s specific concerns:
  • Conditioner: Use Kérastase Elixir Ultime Fondant for intense hydration and detangling.
  • Alternative: Opt for the Kérastase Chronologiste Masque Intense Régénérant as a luxurious alternative to conditioner. This masque provides deep nourishment, strengthens the hair fiber, and leaves your hair feeling silky and revitalized.

3. Prep with a Leave-In Treatment
After towel-drying your hair, apply a leave-in treatment to provide hydration and prepare your hair for styling. Some favorites include:
  • K18 Leave-In Repair Mask for repairing and strengthening damaged hair.
  • Initialiste Advanced Scalp and Hair Serum for promoting healthier hair growth.

You can layer leave-in products for maximum benefits: apply a scalp-focused serum, such as  Initialiste , to nourish and strengthen at the roots, and follow with a length-focused leave-in, like K18, to hydrate and protect your strands.

4. Detangle
Use a detangling spray or serum to gently remove knots and reduce breakage. Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid damaging your strands. Some great options include:
  • Kérastase Discipline Fluidissime Anti-Frizz Spray to smooth and detangle unruly hair.
  • Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique for added nourishment and manageability.

Helpful Detangling Tips: Make sure to use a wide-tooth comb or detangle brush, be gentle, work in sections, and begin detangling from the ends and gradually move up towards the roots to avoid damage.

5. Protect
Always use a heat protectant before styling with hot tools. This step is non-negotiable to prevent damage from high temperatures. Try:
  • Kérastase Ciment Thermique for repairing and protecting fragile hair.
  • Kérastase Discipline Keratine Thermique for taming frizz and providing heat protection.

6. Style
Now it’s time to layer on your styling products:
  • Volumizer or Mousse: Apply at the roots for lift and volume.
  • Curl Cream or Gel: Work through the mid-lengths and ends for defined curls or waves.
  • Smoothing Serum or Oil: Use sparingly on the ends to add shine and tame flyaways. We love Kérastase Elixir Ultime Oil for its lightweight yet luxurious finish.

7. Finish
Seal your look with a finishing spray:
  • Hairspray: To lock in your style and provide long-lasting hold.
  • Texture Spray: For a tousled, lived-in look.
  • Shine Spray: For a polished finish.

common mistakes to avoid.

  1. Skipping Heat Protection: Never style without a heat protectant.
  2. Overloading Products: Too many heavy products can weigh your hair down.
  3. Applying Out of Order: Follow the light-to-heavy rule for best results.
  4. Ignoring Your Hair Type: Choose products specifically designed for your hair’s unique needs.

hot tip: consult with the experts.

8 Steps to Better Curls

3/20/2023

Hello curly people! It's me, Advanced Master Stylist & Curl Specialist, Aaron Brousseau writing today to chat about natural curls. As a person with curly hair, I completely understand how frustrating it can be trying to make those damn curls do what you want them to! But never fear - today I am going to share my 8 Steps to Better Curls: Curly Hair Routine.

This curly routine is only 8 steps and it really makes a world of difference in getting the most bounce and definition out of your natural texture. The key equation to remember is that Hydration + Structure = Flawless Curls.

HYDRATING SHAMPOO + CONDITIONER

Starting with hydrating shampoo and conditioner is super important. My top pick is Kerastase Curl Manifesto shampoo and conditioner, they're lightweight but suuuuper hydrating and smell divine.

SOAKING STYLING

On soaking wet hair, apply Oribe Curl Gloss for ultimate hydration, shine, hold and protection from humidity, then follow with Oribe's Curl Gelée by smoothing it through your curls.

SCRUNCH + TWIST

Scrunch your hair to maximize bounce then twist out a few pieces to add definition and detail.

SQUEEZE

Now squeeze some of the excess moisture out with a microfiber towel or a cotton T-shirt (regular towels will cause frizz!), then add a few good dollops of your favourite Curl/Volume mousse! I would recommend trying Oribe's Curl Shaping Mousse or Grandiose Plumping Mousse (I actually love layering the two for a stunning curl volume cocktail ?). Flip your head over and give it one last scrunch.

HOVER

Now, with a diffuser on your blow dryer, heat on high and speed medium, I want you to HOVER!! Do NOT touch the curls until they're almost fully dry! I like to do around 5-7 minutes with my head flipped forward then repeat, flipping the hair to each side, then again on the back. The goal here is to focus most of the airflow at the roots.

DIFFUSE TO DRY

When the hair has formed a bit of a "cast" and the curls are feeling stiff and mostly dry, turn the heat down to low and speed to medium/low. Starting at the ends, start pushing the diffuser up to the scalp, kind of like an accordion!

ADD VOLUME

Once the hair is 10000% DRY the structure will be locked in. You can now work on adding volume by spraying a lightweight texture spray like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray and use a pick to add lift at the roots!

FINAL TOUCH

Finish off by scrunching in your favourite oil for shine, moisture, and protection. Some of my faves are Kerastase Curl Manifesto Huile Sublime, Kerastase Elixir Ultime Oil for Colour-Treated Hair, Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil, and Kevin Murphy Young Again Oil!

As a Curl Specialist, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the fresh confidence my clients gain by learning the best tricks and tips for their natural curls. Every person's hair is unique and you may have to experiment to find the routine and product combo that is best for you - but I hope my 8 Steps to Better Curls helps you find the way to yours!

I would super encourage every single person with curls to book a Curly Cut or a Cadō Cut with me or one of my fellow Curl Specialists at Salon Society - we love helping our clients get the most out of their curls with the right cut and routine.

If you have any questions about curly hair or any of the products mentioned, feel free to send me a DM or leave a comment below. We cannot wait to see you (and your curls) at Salon Society!

Ask a Stylist: Hair Masks

8/7/2022

So we all know that hair masks are great and that they are SO beneficial for our hair… but how am I supposed to be using them? Is this like an everyday thing? Is this a one size fits all? Wait, was I supposed to put conditioner in after I rinsed it out? WAS I SUPPOSED TO RINSE IT OUT???

…If you have ever wondered if you were doing things right, you are not alone! A lovely client recently reached out to her Salon Society stylist after receiving a sample Kérastase hair mask in her online order with very similar questions, which started us thinking about all the FAQs regarding hair masks we get at Salon Society on the regular. Then we took this list to our girl (and Master Hair Artist)
Shanna and had her give us the answers!

And now we have created this ultimate hair mask rundown:
Picture
How often should you use a hair mask?
Depends how often you wash your hair! If you wash it about once a week, use a mask every other time you wash. If you wash your hair more often, like every day or every other day, use a mask once per week. Also, don't wash your hair every day!

Does a hair mask replace conditioner?

PURCHASING A MARRIAGE LICENSE:

In Saskatchewan, couples who want to marry must purchase a Saskatchewan Marriage License.
A marriage license is only valid for a period of three months, or 90 days.  The marriage license becomes effective the day after it is purchased. Therefore, the marriage license can be purchased anywhere from one day to 90 days prior to the wedding ceremony.

The fee to purchase a marriage license is $60.

Your marriage license can be purchased in Regina, it takes minutes to complete. Both you and your partner need to be present, along with two pieces of government issued identification (one with photo identification). If you were like me and didn't have your middle name listed on your passport, be sure to bring a document that DOES list your middle name.

Lists of places to purchase marriage licenses in REGINA, SK:

  • A Tymeless Event (by appointment only)
  • Aurelia Goldsmith Bullion Broker
  • Madni Islamic Centre & Mosque
  • Notary Public Regina
  • Paper Umbrella
  • Paris Jewellers (Southland Mall)
  • Quality Goldsmiths Ltd.

A GUIDE TO: CHANGING YOUR LAST NAME

2/18/2022

Picture
Now that you're married (hooray!) It's time to think about whether or not you'll be changing your name. If you've decided to do so, the process can be a bit complicated.  Luckily, the steps are detailed below so you can focus on other stuff (like thank you cards....)

BEFORE YOU BEGIN, SOMETHING TO CONSIDER...

We know it’s super exciting and you want to take on your new name right away but you do have to change over ALL of your identification cards - including your passport! SO, if you are going on a honeymoon right away you may want to hold off until you’re home so you don’t have any stressful mismatching ID cards!!

FIRST STEP:

GET AN OFFICIAL MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE

The marriage commissioner who performed the marriage ceremony must forward a completed and signed marriage license to the Vital Statistics Registry for registration. The marriage must be registered before you may apply for a marriage certificate.

Some commissioners will present you with a marriage certificate at your ceremony, this document is sufficient.
  • You can apply online for a marriage certificate.
  • Who can apply for a marriage certificate? Info found here.
  • Be sure to order a few extra copies, each copy with cost $35.00

What information do I need to provide when ordering a marriage certificate online?

HOW TO GIVE YOURSELF A BLOWOUT

5/16/2020

EXPERT OPINION:
SHANNA WATTS LEAD HAIR ARTIST

SALON SOCIETY

1368 ROSE STREET, REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN

Shanna Watts
Hey there! We have opened our salon (yay) and you have booked your appointment to get your roots done, but until then... here’s a blog post all about BLOWOUTS. How to maintain your locks, and attempt your blowout at home while waiting for your appointment.
1st step: As soon as I get out of the shower I ring out my hair and brush through a few of my favourite products. Right now I use Olaplex #6 (works great to detangle) and a dime size of Kevin Murphy Young Again Oil on my ends.

2nd step: I always let my hair dry to about 70-80% with the product already combed through to maintain frizz. I put on my makeup, get dressed, eat breakfast, and by then it is dry enough to start!

3rd step: Before blow drying, I spray my hair with a heat protectant! I use Kevin Murphy Heated Defense. I section out my hair and clip the rest on top. Don’t hold the blow dryer so that it’s touching the brush, hold it just an inch or two away from your hair.
HOT TIP: I always try to hold my brush so that the handle is pointing forward. For me, it makes things feel less awkward!
4th step: I take the next section of hair and do the same thing. If you can’t do the back, it’s easier to pull your hair all to the front! For the top back section I will pull my section of hair straight up with my brush and blow dry to increase the volume.
5th step: For my bang area I like to blow dry my hair away from my face. Just so that it doesn’t curl completely under and I get a little volume at the root. Finish it off with a light hairspray, my favourite is Kevin Murphy Bedroom Hair.
Practice makes perfect, I promise! It’s a little tricky to figure out how to hold a brush and the blow dryer and make sure your hair isn’t flying everywhere... but find what is comfortable for you and go with that! And if not, we’ll be here to save you. ️

See you very soon, Shanna <3

4 TIPS FOR BEGINNER NAIL ART

4/25/2020

EXPERT OPINION:
AILESH ABRAMS, NAIL TECHNICIAN

SALON SOCIETY

1368 ROSE STREET, REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN

Best nails regina
Hey there! Ailesh here from Salon Society in Regina, Saskatchewan.

For my first ever blog post I decided to write about something I am very passionate about - nail art. I love trying new things, keeping up with nail trends, and learning new techniques. I know first-hand how daunting nail art can seem, especially when you're just starting out, so I've put together my top tips for beginners to nail art - I hope you enjoy them!
Picture
1. Keep It Simple
If you are just starting out keep it simple and easy. Classic designs like polka dots, hearts, and flowers are a great starting point and will help to hone your fine motor skills.
Picture
2. Add A Twist
Find an simple design and jazz it up with a twist. For example, layering different coloured polka dots. Adding a matte top coat is another easy way to transform a look!
Picture
3. Perfectly Imperfect
Aim for designs that don't require perfection. Instead, try looks that allow for imperfection from nail to nail - think bold brush strokes, abstract designs, and mixing textures and patterns. This is especially helpful if you are trying to do nail art on both hands but aren't comfortably ambidextrous yet.
Picture
4. Go All Out (Almost)
Go all out, full crazy nail art - on one hand. Use your dominant hand to create the nail art of your dreams on one hand. Then using your non-dominant hand, paint simple solid coloured nails in a colour that compliments the design hand.
