Earth Day: How We Are Making a Difference

4/22/2021

Happy Earth Month friends! Roma from Salon Society here on the blog today to talk about everything eco! I am a hippie trapped in a concrete jungle and do everything I can to ensure I am eco-friendly and sustainable. One of the things I love most about working in an eco-friendly salon is a shared belief that environmental consciousness is incredibly important, both at work and at home. Here are some of the ways we strive to be earth-friendly!
Picture

IN-SALON

  • Our salon is largely paperless: all appointments are scheduled using an online system and we send receipts electronically
  • Our shopping bags are made from paper and are recyclable
  • We aim to stock products that are made naturally and are environmentally-friendly.
  • We proudly sell Kevin Murphy hair products, which are cruelty-free, made using eco-friendly methods, and packaged using sustainable Ocean Waste Plastic.
At KEVIN.MURPHY, we make every effort to help and protect the environment by utilising packaging that is recyclable or biodegradable. We use only natural ingredients from sustainable and renewable sources, that are harvested in a way that does no harm to the environment at all.
- Kevin Murphy Website
  • We carry Routine Natural Deodorant, which is made in Canada and only contains clean, wholesome ingredients. Their deodorant jars are refillable at places in Regina like The Alternative, our neighbours! Visit the full list of refill stations in Canada.
Picture
  • We are a member of Green Circle Salons - a global program started in Toronto to help beauty industry professionals recover up to 95% of their beauty waste. This amazing program allows us to recycle the following:
    • hair clippings
    • excess hair colour/colour tubes
    • used metals and foils
    • used single-use items
    • paper and plastic waste
    • PPE waste
Fun fact: Green Circle Salons sends recycled hair clippings to help clean up oil spills in the ocean!
Green Circle Salons' website has TONS of great information about how salon waste can be recycled through their program. It's pretty crazy and inspiring - check it out!

BEHIND THE SCENES

  • Our team always separates all recyclable products from trash from any salon supplies, furniture, lunches, beverages, etc.
  • We keep reusable plates, cutlery, and cups in our staff room
  • We use dryer balls in our salon laundry rather than dryer sheets
  • For cleaning, we use eco-friendly products and reusable cloths instead of paper towel
  • Our bathroom paper towel is made from recycled materials
  • We reuse shipping boxes and mailer envelopes received in the mail for our outgoing orders!
  • We use refillable or compostable K-Cups in our Keurig machine
  • All of our wall-hanging planters are made from recycled milk jugs (Wally Gro - check them out!)
  • We collect garbage from around our building on a daily basis - it's shocking how much we pick up!
  • Our team brings in homemade snacks and drinks to share to help cut down on single-use plastics from restaurants
  • We collect pop can tabs to be recycled into wheelchairs!
(If this interests you, help out by bringing your can tab collection to your next appointment!)

AT HOME

On top of our salon initiatives, our team also wanted to share some of the sustainable practices we have implemented into our own lives:
  • Using reusable straws/cutlery/baggies
  • Using dryer balls instead of dryer sheets
  • Carrying a reusable water bottle
  • Making our own snacks
  • Growing a garden
  • Recycling whenever possible
  • Bringing our own grocery bags
  • Carpooling
  • Riding bicycles instead of driving
  • Using eco-friendly cleaning products/refilling stations
  • Composting
  • Using biodegradable cleaning tools (bamboo dish scrubbers, toothbrushes, Q-tips, etc.)
  • Turning off lights when leaving a room
  • Avoiding single-use plastics
  • Bringing our own take-out containers to restaurants
  • Reusing recyclable containers
(yogurt, sour cream, pasta sauce, etc.)
  • Buying bulk foods in reusable containers
    (i.e. Bulk Barn)

EXPERT OPINION:
AARON BROUSSEAU, LEAD HAIR ARTIST

SALON SOCIETY

1368 ROSE STREET, REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN

Best Hairstylist Regina
Heya for those of you who don’t know me yet I'm Aaron Brousseau and I’m a Lead Hair Artist at Salon Society in Regina, Saskatchewan.

If you’ve ever visited our beautiful space at 1368 Rose Street, you’ve probably seen me or at least experienced my larger than life personality! One of the things I’m known for is my eccentric facial hair. That is (most of the time) meticulously groomed. The question I get asked the most is “how long does that take?” or “how do you get it to do that?” I usually keep the answers short and sweet but today I’m going to show you all my secrets on how to style the perfect beard.
  • Wash and rinse with your favourite shampoo and conditioner, mine is KM Hydrate me wash and rinse or KM Stimulate me wash and rinse.
  • Use a cream-based styling balm to detangle and  hydrate. I use Olaplex #6 for its ability to keep the frizz away and gives added heat protection.
  • Apply a hair oil liberally. My pick is the young again oil from KM this will hydrate and moisturize and help keep your skin from getting dry and flaky.

  • Comb beard outward and trim unruly hair. Keep scissors running parallel with your beard or you might accidentally cut too much off. Don’t pull hair out with tension to cut it or you will have chunks missing when you comb it back into place.
  • Heat style, I use a round brush when I blow dry my mustache (that’s the best way to shape my magnificent handle bars) And my hands or a flat brush on the rest of my beard.
  • Style mustache with hard hold gel. Got2be Glued spiker has been my go to for years.
  • Then smooth out remaining fly away hair with a med hold balm, The KM Free hold is perfect for locking down the unruly stubborn hairs. It leave your beard feeling soft and smelling great.
And there you have it the perfect beard that feels, smells, and looks amazing!

Shanna, Journeyman Hairstylist at Salon Society, Regina, Sask
Hey there, my name is Shanna Watts! I’m a Lead Hair Artist at Salon Society in Regina, SK. Some of you may know me, but for those of you that don’t... here are a few facts about me:

  • I have been doing hair for 4 years, and received my journeyman designation in 2019
  • I grew up in Raymore, SK (small town girl, not farm girl lol)
  • I have a four month old puppy named Duffy who I am obsessed with
  • Some of my closest friends are my coworkers at Salon Society

This blog post is going to be a few tips on how to style your hair without putting any heat on it. During this quarantine period, there’s no real reason to be putting heat on your hair. It’s the perfect time to give your hair a break! But if you’re like me who has crazy/curly/frizzy hair, you’ll need to do SOMETHING to it to feel human everyday.

DRUG STORE VS. SALON PRODUCTS

EXPERT OPINION:
TYLER CARAGATA, MASTER HAIR ARTIST

SALON SOCIETY

1368  ROSE STREET, REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN

Tyler at Salon Society, Regina, Saskatchewan
Greetings from quarantine and my couch!

Being cooped up in my home for the past couple of weeks watching so many T.V. shows and a lot of commercials about hair products being sold in our drug stores has got me thinking…

Do you really know what's in that bottle?

A lot of major beauty companies(we won’t mention any names) that we see in our drug stores are mass produced and contain a lot of ingredients that we cannot pronounce thus resulting in a hell of a deal($$$). One of the ingredients that we see in shampoos and conditioners from them is actually wax, plastics and high percentages of alcohol. Yes, your hair feels clean and soft, but it is?

Majority of these drug store products also contain a lot of sulphates which causes a huge lather that appears to be cleaning your hair. When actually all it is doing is leaving all of that dirt in your hair and putting a wax coat over top of it. Gross eh?

That sizzle you hear when you pass your flat iron through that heat protectant…. That's vodka... Think about it.

Who knows more about your hair’s needs than your stylist?
Why not ask them their professional opinion about Salon Products?

The reasoning why is because your hair is one of your biggest investments as well as it is the first thing that people notice. You spend a lot of money getting your hair done, wouldn’t you wanna take care of that investment?

Kevin Murphy is one of the  brands we carry at Salon Society. All of Kevin Murphy’s products are from natural sources and are created by Kevin himself who is a working stylist in our industry. All of the ingredients listed on the back of the bottles are clearly stated as well as not wax, plastic or alcohol. So they are great for your investment!

Check out our website or message our great staff and get the lowdown from us!

During Covid-19 we are offering curbside pickup and deliveries!

Thank- You for Reading And Stay Safe!

HOW CO-WASHING WILL SAVE YOUR HAIR

EXPERT OPINION: NADINE SEIMS

SALON SOCIETY

I'm Nadine, the owner and one of the Master Hair Artists at Salon Society in Regina, Saskatchewan. I've been on a few hair journeys myself but finding the right products for my hair type was the hardest. I have that baby fine hair, which is easily damaged, and it greases up faster than most people I know. Luckily for me, I found a method that has changed *most* of that.  Today I'm going to share with you my methods of co-washing and hair training so that you too can train your hair to need less shampooing.

I'm also going to include my tips on the do's and don'ts of hair washing when you have no other choice but wash your hair everyday. Perhaps you are physically active daily, have a job where you get dirty or are one of our frontline workers during the covid-19 pandemic crisis and need to wash your hair daily or sometimes even after every patient.
