Hello hair friends!
Long time no talk. Can you believe it's almost been a whole year since the first lockdown? Crazy times indeed; but I am happy to say we’ve adjusted as needed and I can still be behind the chair everyday doing what I love. Today I am coming to you with a blog about something very near and dear to my heart – fun coloured hair!
My obsession with vivid hair began well before hair school, and I'm pretty sure I scream a little of excitement every time I get to do a crazy colour for my clients. Cue 2021, new and unique trends have been off the charts! I don’t know if it was the boredom of lockdown, the freedom of working from home, or the abundance of Brad Mondo videos that everyone has been watching- but it looks like the vivid colours are here to stay. We’re seeing vibrant money pieces, split dyes, and more creative colours than ever before. It really has been such a great time to be a hairstylist.
Fun note, these trends are not just for bright or bold colours. It’s also for dark and light combos, natural colours or pastels. There are no rules when it comes down to it, allowing you to change things up in whatever shades you’re most comfortable with. Soft pink? We got you! Lilac hues? No problem! That’s my favourite part about these styles, they are completely customizable for each person.
Reservations about switching up your colour game? Consultations are always free! Can’t wait to see you!
Heat is easily the most common method of styling hair; from blow drying to flat ironing, curling to crimping- our hair sees it all. If you’ve ever wondered the best ways to protect your hair from the damage that these beautiful styles cause, this blog is for you!
Consistency is key when seeing results in heat styling, but I promise, the little extra steps make a world of difference. Put that heat protectant on, style those beautiful locks, and go through the weak hair whipping like the goddess you are (or you know, put your hair in a messy bun because quarantine, totally your call!).
Counting the days until I can see all your beautiful faces- and of course- play with your hair.

So you wanna go blonde, do you? Can’t say I blame you! For years blonde has been, and still is a versatile and adored hair colour. I mean, come on, it's beautiful! However, as a brunette – or as someone with previously coloured hair- there are a few things you should consider before diving into this journey.
-Hair health > hair colour. Going blonde is a process, and if rushed or done incorrectly, the repercussions could be the heath of your hair. Trust your stylist and start slow- the results will be a beautiful transition, an attainable colour, and hair that you don’t have to cut 7 inches off of when it's done.
-Blonde is not a one shade fits all. It may take a bit of playing around with tones to find what works best for you and your skin tone, don’t be discouraged by this. Bring lots of photos to your appointment so your stylist can see what you’re liking, and never be afraid to ask us for our expert opinion. (PRO TIP: Pinterest is a great resource, but be cautious of overly edited or filtered photos- try to save photos off of the hair page your stylist has as well!)
-Being blonde is an investment. When taking someone blonde, a typical sitting can range from 2.5-4 hours or longer! There are many more materials being used (foils, bond repair products, etc.) and it is a double-process colour. Thus, it has to be charged accordingly. The best way to address concerns or get an estimate on cost is to book a consultation with your stylist ahead of time, that way you can go into your appointment confident and relaxed.
-Salon products are essential. Because when going blonde, even in the healthiest of ways, it is normal for your hair to need some TLC. Say hello to your new best friends- Olaplex, purple shampoo, and your hair mask of choice.
-Mini maintenance salon appointments go a long way. This one is for my balayage babes! Even though your hair might look fine to grow out for months on months because of that beautiful natural blend; try a tone and treatment (or trim) between the big appointments. This goes a long way in keeping your hair looking and feeling it’s absolute best.
There we have it! I hope this blog answered some of your blonding questions; and in the great words of Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, “Always trust in yourself” (and your stylist-she may have forgotten that part). But seriously, can’t wait to be in the salon again doing all the transformations and making those hair dreams come true!
Until next time!
JUST QUARANTINE THINGS! HOW THE YQR COMMUNITY HAS INSPIRED ME DURING THESE UNCERTAIN TIMES AND THE PRODUCTS YOUR HAIR NEEDS FOR ISOLATION.
Hello hello hair besties, friends and family alike, it’s Kami, back at it with blog number two! I sat down today to write and I decided to sway off my massive list of hair related topics for a minute and just talk about community (don’t worry! I’ll even talk a little bit about hair too- it’s all relative). Our YQR community has amazed and inspired me almost daily since Saskatchewan announced its State of Emergency on March 18th. These are just a few of the things that have warmed my heart, and all happened locally!
-Side walk chalk drawings. If you’ve seen them, you already know what I’m talking about. Every day I walk my dog, and every day I see the cutest and most heart warming drawings. From “Thank you Health Heros” to my personal favorite- a hand with 6 fingers that says ‘WASH YOUR HANDS’ these drawings seriously make me smile.
-The support of local businesses. It makes me so happy to see the massive shift of people who are now choosing to shop local. Everyone has heard that jingle “when you shop at a store with a door, someone in real life does a happy dance” well.. its TRUE. So whether you’re purchasing from your favorite local restaurant or hair salon (wink wink nudge nudge – our online shop is bumpin’), it really is great to be keeping your money here in Regina.
-Free fitness online. Honestly what would I do without this? (probably collapse on my first 10 hour salon day when life returns to normal, that’s what). Some of my favourite YQR fitness clubs are now streaming workouts, check out Oxygen Yoga, Project Barre, and Wheelhouse Cycle Club (even if you don’t have a bike- it’s a vibe).
- The animals are getting ALL the love. CCREZQS is having all the foster fails. Everywhere I look there is a happy doggo hanging out with their human best friend, panting too hard from walk number 6 that day.. but hey, still a huge win! Never heard of a foster fail? Check out their instagram for the low down.
-People are taking care of themselves. I see people sharing online about what they have been doing for themselves as of lately and it’s honestly the best. Sometimes in the craziness that is life, we don’t prioritize our own self-care – but we need to. Read that book, take that walk, do that hair mask. You’re worth it.
So that’s my little see-the-good list.
Counting the days until I’m back behind the chair, drinking coffee and laughing with the best company.
KAMI'S PICKS FOR KEEPING HAIR HEALTHY DURING ISOLATION:
Hi there! Kami here from Salon Society in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Today I sat down to write my first blog post ever, and I decided to go with something that I have had
a lifetime of experience with – thick hair. My love/hate relationship with my frizzy, thick hair started at a young age, and since then I have done just about everything to it (from bleaching it, to shaving it, my poor hair has seen it all) – however, no matter the length or colour, my favourite hair care tips remain the same.
There we have it; those are my top 3 tips for embracing the blessing in disguise that is thick hair!
Until next time hair friends:
